San Juan ~ Santurce

To the east of Old San Juan is a neighborhood called Santurce, more modern and contemporary than Old San Juan. There are several vegan restaurants there, and many regular restaurants have vegan options. Here are my favorite ones, organized alphabetically:

Café Comunión

Located on Avenida Ponce de León, Café Comunión is a cute little café with outdoor seating in the back.

They have many vegan options for drinks, one vegan breakfast option (the tofu scramble pictured here) and a couple of sandwiches you can modify to make vegan. I had the BLT without bacon and no mayo, pictured here too. It was really good!

The staff was friendly, service was good, and they had a lot of merch, in case you’re looking for a cute tote bag!

¡Qué Chido!

This Mexican restaurant located on Calle Loíza has Impossible meat that you can put on tacos on in burritos.

The margarita was excellent, and so was the tamarind juice (they have several kinds of margaritas and natural juices)

The guacamole as an appetizer was very smooth. The bowl was a little heavy on rice, but everything tasted good. The vegan option for the bowl was to choose four sides to top rice or salad: I went with pico de gallo (they have regular and pineapple), guac, and esquites (corn, make sure to ask without cheese on top for vegan).

The place is small and cozy, the staff very friendly, and they have a unisex bathroom.

Los Chamos

For a cheap option in Condado (which is not easy to come by) and a street food feeling, stop by Los Chamos!

They have vegan empanadas (pictured here: black beans and sweet plantain) and vegan arepas (same but with avocado). It’s a really small place, with limited seating, but it was cheap and good.

We didn’t have a lot of time in between activities, and it worked great for us.

Ponte Fresco

We got food to go at Ponte Fresco, but it looked like a really nice place, with some seating inside and some out on a covered patio.

They have some soups (the one vegan option was delicious) and sandwiches already made, and they also have a big salad bar where you can choose from a list of salads or build your own.

The hummus sandwich was really good, and all the ingredients seemed very fresh at the restaurant.
