Door County

The Door County peninsula is famous for its cherries and apples, many lighthouses to visit… and has five State Parks to explore. It’s a beautiful area in all seasons, although many places close down in the winter, so if you go then prepare your trip well.

Here are some restaurants with vegan options to try out when you go to Door County:

Pizza Bros - Egg Harbor

This pizzeria is paired with One Barrel Brewing Company, so you can order beer or cider, but also wine or soda to go with your pizza. The breakfast stout is served in a mug, and was really tasty.

We made our own pizza with vegan cheese (Violife®) and vegan sausage (Beyond®) and a mix of mushrooms and it was delicious, with a thin crust, the right amount of cheese, the mushrooms cooked well, and the flavorful vegan sausage.

I wish they had table service instead of a pizza that comes on a cardboard disk (plastic cutlery optional for salads) and bus your own table. But the food was worth it.

The locale is very large, there were lively groups playing games the evening we were there, and the place has a lot of merchandise to sell (t-shirts, stuffed animals, etc.)

Wild Tomato - Fish Creek

Probably my favorite place in Door County! They have had options for vegan for many years with vegan cheese (Violife®) and vegan sausage (Beyond®). Make your own or modify one that is one the menu.

The pizza is excellent, there is table service, the staff is nice and efficient (even when they’re busy with take out on top of people in the restaurant). They have a wide selection of wines and beers. I also had a “petite” version of the Cherry Walnut salad (ask for no cheese), and it was huge and so crunchy, and I just loved the maple roasted walnuts.

The restaurant is located right across from Peninsula State Park, which makes it a great place to recharge after a hike!

Blue Horse Beach Café

This café, located in Fish Creek near Peninsula State Park, is open year-round and has a great view of the lake.

There are quite a few vegan options on the menu, I had the Vegan Breakfast Burrito, but they also have a plant-based burger, a soup, and a quinoa carrot salad that looked appetizing.

The staff is very nice, and the space is cozy (some seats by the window, some at a long high table, and seating outside when the weather permits).

I only wish they didn’t make everything to-go even as many people eat there. There’s a lot of single use plastics and cups.

But the food is very good, and I love that they’re open every day. They even have desserts from a gluten-free vegan bakery, such as turtle bars, brownies, and peanut butter bars!
